wow what a hard world. And a hard friendship but true loyalty. What impresses me most is how hope was like a rare commodity. When George or Lenny talked of their future farm everything was brighter, just the idea won them friends and respect.

I love what you say about hard friendships. After navigating deep friendships for so many years, I have learned they are not always easy. Sometimes we have to do what can be perceived as terrible things to show our love, or protect those we love. It’s a hard truth to recognize that George shoots Lenny to keep him safe from a world that could not understand him. There was just no room for anyone like Lenny. What a terrible dark time and a sad reflection of human nature- and also such a statement of love George offers to him. I love that about Steinbeck- he pulls us both ways ALL the time! It hurts my heart.

“I may not be much, Mr. Finch, but I’m still sheriff of Maycomb County and Bob Ewell fell on his knife. Good night, sir.”. I guess this is my favourite moment of the book – the showdown on the porch of two people trying to find the best path forward.
