Past Books

These are books that we have recently read and discussed.

The author describes the inlets, bays, islands, and everything they explore in such great detail. She knows so much about the ocean between Vancouver Island and the coast of BC. I found it really cool that I knew some of the places they went in the book. I also found it really fun looking up the places I didn’t know, to see where they were. This book really shows how much she and her children love the ocean.

Autumn… “Children see the world from a “naive” perspective, and often end up following the views that have been imposed on them, both intentionally and not. By looking at the world and problems that arise from a “child’s” perspective, we’re able to look at the fuller picture; not limiting our decisions with what we’ve been told to do by others.”

This was a short but difficult/sad read. It is hard to understand the state of society at that time and understand how George shot Lenny to protect him from the world.

Jayson… ”John Irving made the medical content of this book so realistic. His precision has helped me appreciate the incredible skill of great authors, they are historians, bards, communicators and dreamers all at once.” Andrew… “it was a bit long, it was crazy when Homer’s adoptive parents drowned in a flood and log jam, and when Dr. Larch chased the cadaver through the train stations”.
Thanks to our friends in Nanaimo, the Briars’, for introducing us to this book. It describes our favorite place in the world, Desolation Sound, from the perspective of a rookie to the waves and someone who loves BC as much as we do. It also took us to The Curve of Time, a timeless classic.
